Season Five Recap

A summary for the year...

The school year kicks off with a bang for some of the Camden kids and a real whimper for others. Annie returns to school to get her teaching degree. Simon starts high school and Lucy looks forward to a full year of senioritis and ruling the school. Matt contemplates pre-med and Ruthie escapes her "nemesis" teacher and is placed in a prestigious private school. On the opposite end of the scholastic stick, Mary continues to insist on straying from higher learning, opting instead to discover first hand, the splendor of minimum wage. As the Camden's eldest daughter, Mary discovers it's difficult to find yourself after you've lost your way. She is able to find a job at a local pizza joint however, and the money starts trickling in.

In typical fashion, Mary gets herself a little credit and really begins to enjoy the fruits of her labor--that is until she's let go from her job. And then the bills begin to mount. To make matters worse, Mary starts hanging out with a pretty rough crowd that drinks and uses drugs, and she continuously lets her family down in one way or another. With no job in sight and her credit card bills mounting, Mary becomes desperate. Fearing what may happen to their sister, the other Camden kids break open the twin's piggy bank to help Mary pay her bills.

When Eric and Annie discover the heist made on the twin's piggy bank, they make the heartbreaking realization they can no longer handle their eldest daughter. For the good of the other children, they reluctantly ship Mary off to live in Buffalo with the Colonel and Grandma Ruth.

Just after the family seems to be recovering from the loss of Mary-they are thrown for another loop when Eric agrees to take in Mary's degenerate, yet homeless ex-boyfriend Robbie. Naturally, the realization of the new boarder doesn't sit will with Mary. When Eric finds out she has run away from the Colonel's he suspects the worst. Luckily, she was just returning to attend a surprise party for Eric, held by all the people he's helped over the years.

Being back at the Camden house, with Robbie-feelings start to resurface for Mary and she tells him she's ready to have sex with him. Luckily, the Camden influence has affected Robbie and he tells her that although he loves her he's not ready now. Upon returning to Buffalo, the ever-fickle Mary ends up rekindling her romance with her ex-flame Wilson. Even with all the Mary drama going on, there's still enough to go around for the other Camden kids.

Matt freaks out when he finds out he must undergo a psychological examination as part of his medical school application process. Simon struggles with the attempt to be popular at school and little Ruthie looks to Mary for advice in getting around their parent's wishes. Even Annnie gets her own dose of drama when she discovers she has a stepsister her father never told her about. And not to leave Eric out, he's a bit traumatized when Robbie's dead-beat father shows up out of nowhere and convinces the boy to move out with him-despite Eric's misgivings.

As tough as the entire year has been on the Camden family, they are able to stay close and know they can handle any problem that may come their way-that is until the two eldest Camden daughters throw the family for a double loop. Mary arrives home for the summer, leaving her secretly rekindled romance with Wilson behind-looking forward to spending the summer with her family and Robbie-not necessarily in that order. Things are looking up for her until Wilson arrives to pledge his love. And Lucy shocks everyone when she announces her engagement to Jeremy and her big plans to go to college across the country in New York.
